Two cyclists, Steven Anscomb and Natasha Lewis, were killed on Sunday, September 6, when a car reportedly lost control and crashed into them while they were riding with a third person on Sole Street in Gravesend, Kent. Both Anscomb and Lewis sustained fatal injuries at the scene, according to Kent Police.
The third cyclist involved in the collision was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Authorities have charged 22-year-old Aaron Turner with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and drug possession. He appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court via video link and was granted bail.
Police stated that the white Ford Focus was traveling southwest along Sole Street when it collided with the three cyclists around 7:47 a.m. Two men and a woman were arrested in connection with the incident; the 21-year-old man and 19-year-old woman have since been released on bail pending further inquiries.
In a tribute, Anscomb's wife, Fiona, and daughters, Liberty and Imogen, remembered him as a "kind, caring, hardworking dad, friend, and the most amazing husband." They noted that he had been preparing for a bike ride to Amsterdam and tragically never returned home.
Lewis's daughter, Hermione, described her mother as an "amazing, thoughtful, and strong woman" who cherished exercise. She expressed gratitude for having her as a mother and stated that her mother "had so many more years to experience this life."
