Two Children Survive Waterford Arson Attack; Police Guard Hospital Bedsides
While a teenage girl and a younger boy recover from severe injuries, authorities are maintaining a constant presence at their hospital rooms.
Two children who survived a devastating arson attack that claimed the lives of four family members, including their parents, are under constant police guard at the hospital. The teenage girl and younger boy, whose names have not been released, are recovering from injuries sustained in the fire that tragically killed their parents, Philip and Kim English, and two siblings, Callum, 12, and nine-year-old Jayden.
Gardai, the Irish police force, have taken the unusual step of stationing officers at the children's hospital bedsides. This measure highlights the severity of the incident and ongoing concerns for the survivors' safety. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
Jackie English, the sister of Philip English and aunt to the children, has shared contrasting updates on the condition of the two survivors. She described Callum, one of the deceased boys, as ‘such a bright boy who lived so care free.’ Her other nephew, Jayden, was remembered as ‘always up to trouble. I will miss hearing you call me your favourite aunty.'
Ms. English recounted the harrowing moments after learning of the fire. "I just got my door nearly kicked down asking me to go up, [being told] my brother’s house was on fire by [Philip and] Kim’s neighbours,” she stated, describing the scene of devastation she witnessed.
The community has been left in shock by the tragedy, with neighbours expressing grief and disbelief. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to piece together the events that led to the fatal fire.
