Two Charged in Ireland Arson Attack That Killed Family of Four

A man in his 20s and a woman in her 30s have been charged by Gardaí as part of the investigation into a house fire that claimed the lives of four members of the same family in Ireland. The blaze occurred early Tuesday morning in the Birchwood estate, near Waterford city.

Kim English, her husband Philip, and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine, died in the incident. Their two other children, Nadia, 14, and Elliot, six, remain in critical condition.

Authorities stated that the pair were arrested on Thursday and have now been charged. They are scheduled to appear before a special sitting of Clonmel District Court.

The investigation suggests the attack may have originated from a dispute involving drug debts. Senior sources indicated that a man, known to gardaí and described as a "hired hand" for various gangs, was allegedly contracted by a Traveller gang to carry out the petrol bomb attack. Gardaí have reportedly secured CCTV footage of a vehicle believed to have been used in the attack.

Detectives also arrested the woman on suspicion of acting as the driver. Several raids on properties linked to alleged gangland criminals in the area preceded the arrests. During these raids, phones, laptops, and vehicles were seized and are being forensically examined.

Initial reports suggested a petrol bomb was thrown directly into the Englishes' home. However, investigators now believe the attack may have involved the family's electric car being struck, causing it to explode and ignite the devastating fire. This incident occurred only three weeks after the family's car was targeted in a similar petrol bomb attack, though no injuries were reported at that time. The home of Philip's ex-wife was also previously targeted in a petrol-bomb incident.

Gardaí confirmed that their investigation into the house fire is ongoing.
