Two individuals have been charged in connection with a drive-by shooting that resulted in the death of 13-year-old Jacob Duncan over two years ago in South Carolina.
Caleb Garcia, 23, has been charged with murder, seven counts of assault and battery, possession of a weapon while committing a violent crime, and breach of peace, according to the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office. Garcia is currently serving a sentence in North Carolina for an attempted murder conviction stemming from a shooting that occurred a week after Duncan's death.
Amber Moree, 21, was arrested Tuesday and charged with accessory after the fact of murder, obstruction of justice, and misprision. Arrangements are being made for Garcia to face the charges in Chesterfield County.
Deputies responded to the scene on Jan. 26, 2024, where they found Duncan with a gunshot wound. He later died from his injuries. Investigators determined that Duncan was not the intended target of the shooting. He was struck by a stray bullet while inside a barn on his property, as the shooter was aiming at another individual at the location.
"For two years and five months, Jacob's family has waited for answers while our investigators worked tirelessly to uncover the truth. This case has weighed heavily on our community and, most importantly, on Jacob's loved ones," Sheriff Cambo Streater stated. "While today's announcement will never bring Jacob back, we hope it provides his family with some measure of comfort knowing that those believed to be responsible are being held accountable."
Sheriff Streater commended the dedication of the investigators, stating, "This case serves as a reminder that time does not diminish our commitment to seeking justice. No matter how long an investigation takes, we will continue pursuing the truth and holding those responsible accountable."
Investigators anticipate that additional charges may be filed in the case. An attorney for Garcia had not responded to a request for comment, and attorney information for Moree was not immediately available.
