Two boys are facing charges in Perth Children's Court after allegedly breaking into Perth Zoo and assaulting a crocodile with a metal pole. The incident occurred on Sunday, according to a statement from Perth Zoo.

The zoo reported that an inspection on Sunday evening revealed that unauthorized individuals had accessed a restricted back-of-house area of the crocodile habitat. This act is described by the zoo as reckless and irresponsible, posing risks to both animal welfare and human safety.

The crocodile, a 4.5-meter saltwater reptile named Dangalabba, sustained minor injuries as a result of the alleged assault. Zoo veterinary staff are closely monitoring the animal and providing necessary treatment. Dangalabba, estimated to be around 40 years old and weighing approximately 400kg, was previously relocated from Darwin Harbour due to public safety concerns.

Following the incident, the zoo's resident saltwater crocodile's enclosure was marked as 'off display' on Tuesday. Perth Zoo officials confirmed that the Western Australia Police were immediately notified. An investigation led to the arrest of two boys.

"Animal welfare underpins everything we do at Perth Zoo, and we are deeply disappointed by this incident," a zoo spokesman stated. "Any unlawful intrusion into animal habitats places the welfare of our animals, as well as the safety of individuals, at risk."

The zoo is currently reviewing its security measures, which include physical controls, surveillance systems, and after-hours monitoring, in light of the breach. The two boys are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
