Socialist Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has called for Democrats to impose consequences on party members who do not support Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. Piker, who appeared on the campaign trail with El-Sayed, made the remarks two days after El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in the primary election.

Piker stated on a recent stream that individuals identifying as "centrist Democrats" and expressing reservations about El-Sayed "must be punished." He suggested Democrats should employ "Marxist-Leninist" tactics to ensure party unity after a nominee has been selected.

His comments have drawn criticism from some Democrats. Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, warned on X that Piker's rhetoric could alienate swing voters, advising El-Sayed's campaign to distance themselves from the streamer.

Project Liberal co-founder Joshua Eakle criticized Piker's use of "authoritarian language," comparing his calls for punishment to the tactics of the "MAGA cult around Trump." Eakle also noted that Piker had not endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

Piker responded to Eakle's criticism, labeling him a "koch payroll 'liberal'" and asserting that establishment Democrats who collaborate with Republicans are "irredeemable and must be excised from the party ranks."

This is not the first time Piker has voiced strong opinions regarding El-Sayed's opponents. Following El-Sayed's primary victory, Piker characterized those suggesting El-Sayed needed to mend bridges as "unbelievably Islamophobic pieces of s---." He also pushed back against accusations that El-Sayed was a bad candidate, citing his two degrees and refuting claims made against him.

El-Sayed is set to face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the November general election. The campaign has faced scrutiny over its unity, with figures like Piker advocating for strict party loyalty.

Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville, a known critic of Piker, commented that the party would need to determine its direction in the 2028 primary.
