Reggie and Ronnie, twin Rottweiler puppies training with the Devon and Cornwall Police dog unit, celebrated their first birthday this week. The pair joined the unit in December 2025 at 13 weeks old and have since been undergoing training to follow commands, track scents, and apprehend suspects.
Despite being named after the infamous identical twin gangsters Ronald and Reginald Kray, known for their involvement in criminal activities in the 1950s and 1960s, the young dogs are on the right side of the law. Their namesakes were associated with murder, armed robbery, arson, protection rackets, gambling, and assaults before their incarceration.
Reggie currently weighs approximately 37.5kg, while Ronnie is slightly heavier at 38.1kg. Canine development officer Paul Glennon noted Ronnie's 'fantastic tracking abilities' earlier this year. Glennon explained the choice of names was to create a memorable connection between the dogs, stating, 'We wanted to pick a name that was going to join them together and people would take notice of them, so that's the main reason.' He added, 'Unlike the originals, these guys hopefully are going to be dealing with bad guys and bringing them to book.'
Reggie and Ronnie are expected to complete approximately 14 months of training before being transferred to their handlers for a subsequent three-month course. If they successfully complete their training, they could serve as police dogs until they are eight years old.
