TV presenter Anna Richardson announced on Monday that her father, Canon Jim Richardson, a retired priest, has died at the age of 85. He passed away on Thursday following a battle with vascular dementia.
Richardson shared the news on Instagram, posting a series of images of her father. She explained that in the final two weeks of his life, her father was hospitalized with heart failure, pneumonia, and a collapsed lung. She noted his "astonishing" will to live despite his failing health.
She recalled her father's "extraordinary life," which included traveling the world, working with various faiths, meeting the Pope, and receiving an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II, all while serving his congregation in the Church of England. Richardson described her father as "fun-loving, private, difficult, thoughtful, and oh-so complex."
In a documentary released in 2024, titled "Anna Richardson: Love, Loss & Dementia," Richardson discussed her father's diagnosis. She suggested that his lifelong dedication to the church, which involved stress, a busy schedule, poor eating habits, lack of exercise, and existing health conditions like diabetes, may have contributed to his vascular dementia.
Richardson detailed the final moments, stating that her brother and she stayed by her father's side in the hospital. He took his last breath on June 25, which was her mother's birthday. She reflected on the nature of death, describing it as a messy and physical process, akin to birth, and expressed her hope that her father is now in the company of angels.
