Alison Hammond and Janet Street Porter, hosts on the British television program This Morning, experienced a tense exchange regarding the societal discussion of weight and honesty about weight loss. The debate arose after a doctor suggested increased transparency about weight among the public.
Street Porter expressed that the word "fat" has become a "poisoned word," noting the difficulty in discussing weight openly. Hammond countered that "fat" is simply a descriptive word, and the context and delivery are key. Street Porter described the entire subject as a "minefield," asserting that "nobody tells the truth about how they're losing weight or why they've gained weight."
Hammond, who has publicly shared her own weight loss journey of 11 stone, explained that her motivation stemmed from a personal plea from her late mother. She recounted her mother's words from a hospital bed, urging her to manage her weight. This deeply personal encouragement, coming from a figure of core values, prompted Hammond's significant lifestyle changes.
When Hammond questioned why people might be dishonest about their weight loss, Street Porter reiterated her belief that "nobody tells you the truth." Hammond then inquired how one could discern truth from dishonesty in such conversations.
Street Porter further commented on the prevalence of dishonesty related to weight on social media. She pointed to individuals presenting themselves as healthy while purportedly using weight-loss injections without disclosing it, and others who excessively edit their photos, creating a disparity between their online and real-life appearances.
Hammond has previously shared details of her successful weight loss, attributing it to cutting out sweets and fatty foods, and engaging in regular exercise with a personal trainer. She has also incorporated Reformer Pilates and circuit classes to maintain her fitness. While open to various wellness practices, Hammond has expressed a disinclination towards cold plunge pools, finding the experience extreme.
Hammond's weight loss efforts were also influenced by her mother's experience with type 2 diabetes and her own diagnosis of being pre-diabetic, which she found frightening. She decided to adopt a more adult approach to her health, focusing on dietary changes and physical activity.
