TV Host Expresses 'Crush' on NHL Coach During Live Broadcast
A sports host's on-air remarks about a married NHL coach have sparked online discussion.
A TV host has drawn attention for expressing a "crush" on a married NHL head coach during a live broadcast, stating she would be "waiting in the wings" should his marriage encounter difficulties.
Rod Brind'Amour, whose Carolina Hurricanes recently won the Stanley Cup, was the subject of discussion on the CBS 17 show 'Wake Up Later, Carolina.' Host Judith Retana, when asked by colleague Rachel Duensing about Brind'Amour, admitted her feelings.
"You know I have my little crush on Rod Brind'Amour," Retana said. "I respect his wife. I'm sure they have a good thing going there but I'll be waiting in the wings in case anything goes awry. I'm no stranger to dating married men."
A on-screen clarification appeared shortly after, stating: "Clarification: previously married men as in divorced or separated." Retana continued, adding that she doesn't mind "baggage" like men with children, viewing it as a "built-in family."
Duensing appeared visibly uncomfortable, interjecting, "Judith….girl." Retana added that she had not been a fan until the playoff season.
Brind'Amour, 56, has been married to Amy Biedenbach since 2010 and they have one son. He previously divorced Kelle Sullivan Gardner in 2004, with whom he has three children.
Brind'Amour is one of seven individuals in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup as both a player and head coach with the same team. The Hurricanes secured their second Stanley Cup by defeating the Golden Knights in Game 6 of the finals.
