John Amabile, a designer renowned for the hit television series "60 Minute Makeover," where he orchestrated rapid property transformations, has concluded an extensive renovation of his personal residence that spanned 22 years. The project, which Amabile described as his "biggest fixer-upper ever," involved a complete overhaul of a "dated and gloomy" 1960s cottage in the Glasgow suburb of Milngavie.
Amabile purchased the Swiss chalet-style cottage, built in 1967, for £389,000. He initially envisioned a five-year renovation period, but various factors, including the need to save for materials, obtain permissions, and his frequent filming schedules, extended the process to over two decades. The redesign involved extending the original structure in multiple directions and incorporating modern design elements to create a more spacious and light-filled environment.
"Doing up the house has been a challenge, but one that I’ve adored," Amabile stated. "As well as being a lovely home, it’s been a wonderful place for entertaining." He emphasized that despite his television persona, his home is intended for relaxation and enjoyment.
The property, which was originally dark with few windows, has been transformed into a five-bedroom home. Following its extensive renovation, the house is now on the market for £995,000. Amabile, 62, and his husband have decided they no longer need a property of this size.
Amabile, who grew up in Paisley and studied interior design, began his career in TV set design in London. He also made appearances on shows like "Better Homes" and "GMTV" before achieving stardom with "60 Minute Makeover." He continues to operate his interior design company and has recently established a design school offering classes for individuals undertaking their own renovation projects. Despite the lengthy duration of his recent home project, Amabile expressed eagerness for his next undertaking.
