Gennaro Contaldo, a celebrated television chef, has recounted an incident in which he fought off a young thief who snatched his mobile phone at an east London market. The 77-year-old chef, known for his culinary expertise and appearances on shows like "Two Greedy Italians," was in Walthamstow market when the theft occurred.
"I had my phone in my hand... This girl comes along – it was a girl, after, I realised – jumped on me, bang, took my phone," Contaldo said. Instead of raising an alarm, he subdued the thief, pinning her to the ground until he could retrieve his phone. During the struggle, two mobile phones were recovered from the alleged thief's pocket.
"I put my hands inside her pocket and two phones came out. One came out, I said, this is not mine. The other one... I picked it up," Contaldo explained. He stated that bystanders, who recognized him, assisted in the situation. He identified the thief as being "only 20-odd years old" and told her to leave.
The chef, who has cooked for Princess Diana and mentored Jamie Oliver, now travels with two phones as a precaution against loss or theft. He highlighted the increasing reliance on mobile devices for essential functions such as tickets, appointments, and banking, emphasizing the potential disruption caused by losing a phone.
