Turkish Police Raid Opposition TV Station, Halt Broadcasts

Turkish police raided the Istanbul headquarters of the pro-opposition television channel Halk TV on Wednesday, halting its live broadcasts and appointing a new manager to oversee the station. Employees reported being unable to enter the building.

Reports from Turkish media indicated that financial crimes police were conducting searches at the premises and that 17 arrest warrants had been issued. The raid is reportedly linked to the channel's owner.

Halk TV is widely considered to be aligned with the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and has frequently offered criticism of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's ruling AK party. This action follows other recent legal moves that critics say tighten Erdoğan's control over the country. In May, a Turkish court removed the CHP leadership from its executive positions, a decision the opposition decried as further consolidating Erdoğan's power. Istanbul's Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu, often viewed as Erdoğan's most significant political rival, has been imprisoned for over a year on corruption charges, which he denies.
