Turkish Comedian Convicted of Insulting Erdoğan, Ordered Released

An Istanbul court has convicted stand-up comedian Deniz Göktaş of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, sentencing him to nearly 19 months in prison. However, the sentence was reduced due to time served, and Göktaş is expected to be released in the coming hours. He has also been placed under a travel ban, prohibiting him from leaving Turkey.
A final decision in the case rests with the court of appeals. Göktaş, who denied the charges, had already spent approximately 90 days in prison. Prosecutors had sought a sentence of up to 12 years.
Göktaş's case occurs amidst a broader crackdown in Turkey, which human rights organizations contend is designed to suppress dissent. His stand-up routine, which went viral on YouTube and garnered over 15 million views, led to his arrest in July as he returned from a holiday. Prosecutors focused on a segment where he characterized the Turkish leader as a "shy dictator." Göktaş maintained that his comments were a "political characterization" and not an insult.
During his court appearance, Göktaş reportedly maintained his sense of humor despite his time in solitary confinement, joking that the three months taken from his life would be offset by quitting smoking. His supporters, including fellow comedian Firat Aksal, expressed surprise and relief at the verdict, having harbored doubts about receiving a fair trial.
Aksal stated that Göktaş would rest before returning to the stage. The comedian's release comes as many others, including journalists, activists, and political figures, remain incarcerated in Turkey.
