Tumi Carry-On Named Best Luggage in 2026 Awards

The Tumi 19 Degree Expandable Carry-On has been named the best overall luggage in the 2026 "Made It Here Awards" by the New York Post. The awards evaluated numerous carry-on suitcases based on durability, maneuverability, capacity, storage, design, and aesthetics.

First Class Selections

In the "First Class" category, designed for premium options, the Tumi 19 Degree Expandable Carry-On was praised for its lightweight build, making it easy to lift into overhead bins. It features a molded hardshell designed to withstand heavy impact, a USB-C charging port, and TSA-approved locks. While its smooth wheels can cause it to roll away easily and its warranty is limited, testers found the expandable feature and overall stability to be superior.

The "Most Luxurious" award went to the Carl Friedrik The Carry-on, noted for its premium aluminum construction, TSA-approved combination locks, and 360-degree Hinomoto spinner wheels. However, its drawbacks include a substantial weight, susceptibility to wear and tear, and a non-expandable design. Similarly, the Rimowa Original Cabin Carry-on, recognized as the "Best Aluminum" option, offers a high-end anodized aluminum build and a multiwheel system. It also features TSA-approved locks and a flexible divider but is heavy, shows wear easily, and is not expandable.

Direct-to-Consumer Aesthetics

This category focused on stylish yet functional suitcases. The Monos Carry-On Pro Plus earned the "Best Maneuverability" award for its built-in front pocket, aerospace-grade polycarbonate shell, and included laundry and shoe bags. While its dimensions might require checking with airlines, its front compartment reduces interior space, and it is prone to scratches.

The July Carry-On Max Expandable Carry-on was highlighted for "Best Storage," boasting a large capacity and an expandable feature, along with a tough polycarbonate shell and built-in tracking technology. Its size may also necessitate airline checks, and the prominent branding was noted as a potential drawback for some.

Away The Carry-On received the "Best Organization" award, featuring a durable polycarbonate shell, various color options, and an interior compression system with mesh pockets. However, it has a limited warranty, and its shell scratches easily.

Overpackers Anonymous

Suitcases in this category prioritize storage solutions for those who tend to pack heavily. The Amazon Basics Hardside Carry-On was named "Best Budget" for its excellent value, 360-degree spinner wheels, and lightweight ABS plastic construction. Its main drawbacks are the ABS shell's proneness to cracks and the absence of a lock.

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner was recognized as "Best for International Travel." It offers solid carry-on capacity, a smart packing system with accessory pockets, USB-A and USB-C ports, and MagnaTrac spinner wheels. Its size can be on the larger side, and its hard shell showed scuffs after a drop test.

For "Best Lightweight," the Samsonite Elevation Plus Hardside Carry-On stood out. It features an adjustable handle, durable nylon tires, a strong polypropylene shell, and includes packing cubes and an integrated AirTag holder. Fewer color options were noted as a con.

Testing Methodology

Each suitcase underwent rigorous testing, including a packing challenge to assess capacity and storage, navigating urban environments for maneuverability, and durability tests involving stair drops. Scuff resistance and design aesthetics were also evaluated. The testing criteria focused on how well the luggage performed in real-world travel scenarios, from airport security to rough city streets.
