Tumi 19 Degree Carry-On Named Best Luggage After Rigorous NYC Testing

The Tumi 19 Degree Expandable Carry-On has been recognized as the top luggage choice after a comprehensive testing process conducted across New York City. The evaluation, which involved nine different suitcase brands, found the Tumi model to be the most resilient and functional.

The testing regimen included a packing assessment for capacity, a street test to evaluate performance on uneven terrain, a 'bodega test' for maneuverability in tight spaces, and a stair-drop test where each suitcase was dropped multiple times. The Tumi 19 Degree Expandable Carry-On competed in the 'First Class' category alongside other luxury brands like Rimowa and Carl Friedrik, ultimately surpassing them in performance.

The suitcase is constructed from a molded polycarbonate hardshell featuring a distinctive wave pattern, designed to withstand significant impact. It also incorporates an antimicrobial finish on its shell, zippers, and grab handles. Key features include a USB-C charging port, TSA-approved locks, 360-degree spinner wheels, and an expandable interior for increased packing space. The interior is divided into compartments with compression straps.

Weighing just under 8 pounds, the Tumi carry-on offers a balance of durability and portability. Its design includes a three-stage telescoping handle and convenient carry handles. The suitcase is available in seven color options, with an optional monogramming service for the built-in luggage tag.

During testing, the Tumi showed remarkable resilience, with the polycarbonate shell holding up well against scratches and dents from navigating city streets and subway systems. Even after being dropped down stairs five times, the suitcase sustained only minor scratches, a performance that rivaled its more expensive aluminum competitors. The wave-like exterior design was also noted for helping to camouflage minor wear.

In terms of maneuverability, the 360-degree spinner wheels were praised for their smooth and responsive performance, even when the suitcase was fully packed. The adjustable telescoping handle was also found to aid in comfortable maneuvering through various environments.

Compared to its luxury counterparts, the Rimowa and Carl Friedrik aluminum carry-ons, the Tumi offered a lighter weight and expandable capacity, providing greater packing flexibility. While aluminum luggage may offer a classic aesthetic, the Tumi was found to be more practical and resilient under stress.

Retailing at $795, the Tumi 19 Degree Expandable Carry-On is positioned as a premium product. Despite its higher price point, the testing indicated that its durability, functionality, and ease of use justify the cost for frequent travelers. The assessment concluded that the suitcase is a worthwhile investment for those who travel often, particularly for trips of a week or less.
