Tulsi Gabbard became visibly emotional as she provided an update on her husband Abraham Williams' recovery from sacral chordoma, an exceptionally rare cancer located at the base of the spine. In a video shared on social media, Gabbard detailed the challenging treatment Williams has undergone in recent months, including extensive surgery to remove cancerous bone and surrounding tissue.
Doctors are optimistic that the surgical team successfully removed all cancerous material during the nearly seven-hour operation. "A few weeks after the surgery was done, pathologists and the doctor said that they were confident they were able to cut out all of the cancerous bone and tissue," Gabbard stated.
Despite the successful surgery, Gabbard cautioned that the battle is not yet over. Williams will require frequent MRI scans to monitor for any recurrence of the cancer. She described the immediate post-operative period as particularly difficult, with Williams experiencing severe reactions to anesthesia and significant pain during his recovery.
Williams has been undergoing physical therapy to regain strength and mobility, demonstrating determination throughout the process. "Overall, Abraham is progressing very well," Gabbard reported, though she emphasized that a long road still lies ahead.
Gabbard announced in May 2026 that she was stepping down as Director of National Intelligence to dedicate her full attention to supporting her husband through his treatment and recovery. She has spoken about the importance of faith during their ordeal, expressing gratitude for "unconditional love, for being our shelter, for being our peace and our strength."
During the emotional update, Williams comforted a tearful Gabbard, embracing her and expressing his love. The couple has also received significant support and prayers from friends and the public.
Since leaving her role, Gabbard has largely remained out of the political spotlight, focusing on her husband's health. However, she has recently commented on political matters, including accusing Dr. Anthony Fauci of misleading Congress and suggesting intelligence officials suppressed information about the origins of COVID-19.
