Tugendhat Accuses Miliband of Pursuing 'Personal Agenda' Over National Interest
Shadow Foreign Secretary Tom Tugendhat criticizes Ed Miliband's foreign policy decisions, citing concerns over energy security, international relations, and the role of the Foreign Office.
Conservative Party Conference, Birmingham – Tom Tugendhat, the shadow foreign secretary, has sharply criticized Ed Miliband, accusing the latter of prioritizing a "personal agenda" over the United Kingdom's national interests. Tugendhat asserted that Miliband's focus on environmental concerns and "virtue signalling" is detrimental to the UK's energy security and its relationships with key allies.
Speaking at the Conservative Party Conference, Tugendhat called for the Foreign and Development Office to shift from acting like an "international NGO" to actively projecting British power abroad. He specifically targeted Miliband's recent handshake with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi at the UN, occurring amidst ongoing concerns about state-sponsored terrorism linked to Iran impacting the UK.
Tugendhat, formerly the security minister, also took aim at the decision to impose sanctions on Israel over its settlements in the West Bank, an action he believes caused significant strain with a crucial security partner. "We think it is wrong to have a man in the foreign office who ties our energy to China instead of deepening and strengthening our union by tapping resources from the North Sea," Tugendhat stated, drawing applause from the audience.
He further elaborated on his critique, saying, "We think it is wrong to have a Foreign Secretary who chooses to virtue signal over intelligence sharing in a way that will keep Britain safe, because that isn't serving the British people. That is serving his personal agenda."
Illustrating his point, Tugendhat gestured towards a Shahed-136 drone, similar to those used by Russia in Ukraine, suspended in the hall. He condemned Iran's role in "spreading fear and hatred around the world" and accused nations like Iran and Russia of manipulating international structures against the UK's interests.
"For too long, many in the Foreign Office have acted as though they were an international NGO," Tugendhat remarked. "And they've forgotten that the treaties are there to make Britain stronger, not to make us weaker, and that the job of the king's representatives is to protect and defend the King's realm."
The criticism comes as the UK navigates complex international relations and energy policy challenges, with Tugendhat advocating for a foreign policy that he argues more directly serves British security and prosperity.
