Pima County Sheriff's deputies have arrested Santiago Jorge Rogers, 39, in connection with the home invasion and shooting that killed Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez and injured his fiancée.
Ramirez, 23, was shot and killed at his southwest Tucson home early Wednesday morning, Aug. 19. He was scheduled to graduate from the police academy on Aug. 27. His fiancée, also 23, who works as a corrections officer for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, was hospitalized in the incident. Ramirez previously served as a corrections officer for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies apprehended Rogers on Saturday morning at a hotel on South Palo Verde Road in Tucson. He is being held without bond at the county jail. According to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, the suspects were wearing black clothing and ski masks during the home invasion, which occurred around 6 a.m.
Alex James Barnett, 33, is still wanted by authorities and is considered a person of interest in the case. Barnett has a criminal history that includes prior convictions for burglary and weapons offenses. He has also used the name Alex Wilson and pleaded guilty to unlawful imprisonment in December 2024.
Authorities last saw Barnett wearing a red shirt and black leather vest, and he was reportedly riding a Harley-Davidson FLHXS motorcycle with Arizona license plate DA466. He is wanted on a charge of first-degree murder for Ramirez's death.
While court records for Rogers did not show prior cases in Pima County, a man of the same name and age has previous convictions in Yavapai County for drug and shoplifting offenses, as well as charges related to contraband possession in Navajo and Graham Counties.
Surveillance video shows individuals identified as Rogers and Barnett purchasing items at a gas station convenience store approximately 20 minutes before the shooting. Later surveillance footage captured a third, unidentified man parking the suspect vehicle, a gray Acura MDX SUV, in a parking lot and walking away. Detectives have contacted this individual, but no arrest has been made as investigators work to determine his involvement.
Anyone with information regarding the case or Barnett's whereabouts is urged to contact 911 or 520-88-CRIME.
