An Arizona police recruit was killed and his fiancée was injured after they were shot inside their home near Tucson on Wednesday. Carlos Ramirez, 23, a recruit with the Tucson Police Department, was found with a fatal gunshot wound. His fiancée, a corrections officer with the Pima County Sheriff's Office, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.
Investigators are seeking two Hispanic men, described as wearing black clothing and ski masks. The suspects were reportedly seen leaving the scene in a gray SUV.
The Pima County Sheriff's Office responded to the couple's home around 6 a.m. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated at a press conference that the incident was a "tragic event and a tremendous loss for our community, this city and our department." Ramirez was reportedly days away from graduating from the police academy, having completed 23 weeks of training. His graduation was scheduled for August 27.
The Tucson Police Department confirmed Ramirez's status as a recruit and expressed condolences to his family, fiancée, and academy staff. His classmates remembered him as having the demeanor and presence that would have made him a "great cop."
Sheriff Nanos also confirmed that Ramirez and his fiancée have a child together. The investigation is active and being led by the Pima County Sheriff's Office.
