Tuchel Regrets Not Eating World Cup Grass
England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed a peculiar regret regarding the Azteca grass after a significant World Cup victory.
England manager Thomas Tuchel revealed a peculiar regret following England's World Cup victory over Mexico: he wished he had eaten some of the Azteca grass. This sentiment was shared in the FA's upcoming film, 'Reflections: England's World Cup journey.'
Tuchel described the win, where England played a man down against the co-hosts and secured a 3-2 victory after Jarrell Quansah received a red card, as one of the Three Lions' great achievements. He stated, "I texted a friend after the match and I just wrote, 'I regret that I didn't eat some grass after the match to keep something from this in my body forever'. That was the feeling. That was the moment."
He elaborated on the significance of the match, noting, "This game had so much of what you could wish for." Tuchel recalled a moment where player Jordan fell over and broke his arm, emphasizing the team's immediate and empathetic response. "Within a second, the players were there. Every single player was there stopping the celebrations, building a shield, protecting Jordan, not going anywhere, in full empathy. It was so special."
The win was met with widespread celebration among England fans. Tuchel, who will lead the team into a home Euros in two years, believes the team is now better positioned to secure their first major trophy since 1966. "It feels like they are my players now, it's something to build on," he said. "I'm very excited. I think we got another step closer and I think we're there."
England is set to participate in four Nations League games soon. The first match is against Spain on September 26, followed by two games against Czechia and one against Croatia. The squad for these fixtures is scheduled to be announced on Friday.
