Tuchel Points to Defensive Errors and Potential Distractions in Spain's Victory Over England

Thomas Tuchel expressed disappointment following England's loss to Spain, attributing the defeat to crucial defensive errors and conceding that potential distractions might have affected his players. The England manager highlighted that the first two goals conceded by the Three Lions directly resulted from the players giving away possession.

Marc Guehi was dispossessed by Lamine Yamal, leading to Spain's early opening goal. Shortly after, Nico O'Reilly committed a similar error in a build-up situation, which also led to a Spanish goal. Tuchel described the defending for Spain's winning goal as insufficient.

When questioned about whether off-field news, specifically regarding Manchester City players, could have been a distraction, Tuchel acknowledged the possibility. "I can imagine maybe for the Manchester City players," he stated, though he emphasized it was not a topic for him personally. He added, "It was not a topic for me. I didn't feel it distracted." The manager noted that players have more time than he does to discuss such matters and that it's natural for them to talk about ongoing court cases.

England had managed to take a halftime lead against Spain, with Harry Kane having an opportunity to extend the advantage. However, Kane's penalty kick struck the crossbar, a moment Tuchel identified as a turning point that allowed Spain to regain momentum.

"We made the worst possible start against a team like Spain who love to control the game and play with confidence and on the ball," Tuchel said. "It cost us a little confidence, that is normal. We had another two big mistakes in build-up situations and conceded two big chances and survived those chances."

Tuchel further explained that England's inability to score a third goal, particularly in the second half, proved decisive. "That would have been the decisive punch to get this full momentum and belief. We couldn't do it. Then unfortunately another technical mistake cost us. Then the momentum shifted again. We conceded one goal from open play which we should absolutely defend better."

Despite the outcome, Tuchel believes his team could have secured a win. "The result is not what we wanted. I think we could have won it. We have to live with it, recover from it, learn from it. Do what we did on the same level and reduce and improve our mistakes," he concluded.
