TSA Halloween Costume Rules: What Flyers Need to Know
Travelers planning to wear costumes on Halloween should be aware of TSA guidelines to avoid security delays.
As Halloween approaches, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has outlined specific guidelines for travelers wishing to fly in costume. While wearing a costume during air travel is generally permitted, certain items and materials may cause issues at security checkpoints.
Costumes incorporating metal pieces are a primary concern. Detachable metal components and metal-based outfits must be packed in checked luggage or carry-on bags that can be screened separately to ensure they pass through security without delay. This rule applies to a wide range of costume elements, from armored suits to accessories with metallic embellishments.
Furthermore, travelers are prohibited from bringing prop replicas of explosives, such as bombs or grenades, in both checked and carry-on bags. Other realistic weapon props, including fake knives, swords, pitchforks, and light-sabers, should not be placed in carry-on luggage. While these items might be permitted in checked baggage, their inclusion is subject to the discretion of TSA officers.
Full face coverings, such as masks or heavy makeup that obscures the face, are also discouraged for wear during the security screening process. Passengers may be required to remove these items for identification, which can slow down the screening process. For those planning to use Halloween-themed makeup, standard TSA regulations apply. Powdered makeup exceeding 12 ounces must be placed in checked luggage or a separate bin for screening. Liquid makeup, including fake blood and liquid latex, must adhere to the TSA's 3-1-1 liquid rule for carry-on bags: containers must be 3.4 ounces or less and fit within a single, quart-sized, clear, resealable bag. Larger quantities of liquid makeup can be transported in checked bags.
These guidelines come as the public's attention turns to Halloween preparations. The TSA reminds travelers to pack smart and be aware of prohibited items to ensure a smooth travel experience during the holiday season.
