TSA Finds Pocketknife Hidden Inside Toothpaste Tube at Dallas Airport

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL) discovered a pocketknife concealed within a tube of toothpaste during a routine carry-on bag screening.

TSA Officer Jazmine Kramer identified a suspicious metallic object on the X-ray scan of a passenger's carry-on bag, which was then flagged for a closer inspection. Security training instructor Wade Brown Jr. searched the toiletry bag and, after a second X-ray pass, located the item. A closer examination revealed the pocketknife hidden inside the toothpaste tube.

The travelers told officers that their son had suggested the unusual concealment method in an attempt to get the knife through airport security. "I was super surprised when they both said that," Brown said. "This was the first time at DAL I had ever seen someone intentionally hide an item inside something else in an attempt to get it through security."

Brown noted the importance of inter-officer communication when an item detected on X-ray cannot be immediately found during a physical search. "If one officer sees something and another officer cannot locate it during the search, work together and communicate until you find it," he advised.

TSA Dallas Love Field Federal Security Director Amy Williams stated that officers are trained to identify and resolve unexpected threats. "A knife concealed inside a toothpaste tube is not something travelers typically encounter, but it is exactly the type of threat our officers are trained to identify and resolve," Williams said.

The couple voluntarily surrendered the pocketknife and were permitted to proceed with their flight. In a separate incident at Tampa International Airport, TSA officers found a knife hidden inside a baseball bat-shaped flashlight. In that case, the passenger was arrested and prohibited from traveling.
