TSA Discovers Pocketknife Hidden Inside Toothpaste Tube at Dallas Airport

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL) discovered a pocketknife concealed within a tube of toothpaste, according to an account published by the agency. The unusual find occurred during a routine carry-on screening.

TSA Officer Jazmine Kramer noticed a metallic object near the toiletries on the X-ray monitor and flagged the bag for further inspection. Security training instructor Wade Brown Jr. searched the bag but could not immediately locate the item. After running the bag through the X-ray machine again, Brown identified the toothpaste tube as the source of the anomaly. He discovered tape near one end of the tube, which led to the discovery of the hidden pocketknife.

When questioned, the married couple who owned the bag explained that their son had suggested concealing the knife inside the toothpaste tube as a way to get it through airport security. Brown noted that this was the first time he had encountered someone intentionally hiding an item inside another object at that airport to bypass security.

The couple voluntarily surrendered the pocketknife and were permitted to continue to their flight. TSA officers highlighted the importance of inter-officer communication when an item detected on an X-ray is not found during a physical search.

Dallas Love Field Federal Security Director Amy Williams stated that officers are trained to identify and resolve such unexpected threats. The incident follows a previous report of a 4-inch, double-edged knife found concealed within a baseball bat-shaped flashlight at Tampa International Airport. In that case, the passenger was arrested.
