Former President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he will not sign a sweeping housing bill recently passed by Congress until the SAVE Act is also passed. The White House had previously expressed strong support for the housing package, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt calling it “one of the most significant pieces of housing affordability legislation in American history” on Tuesday.
Leavitt stated that the bipartisan bill contained policies long championed by Trump, including measures to cut unnecessary red tape, increase housing supply, and limit institutional investors' purchasing of single-family homes. She added that Trump was fulfilling a promise to lower housing costs and make homeownership more attainable. The announcement of a bill signing was scheduled for Wednesday, less than 24 hours after Leavitt’s statement.
However, Trump’s abrupt reversal means the bill will not be signed by him. Despite this, the legislation may still become law. Typically, if a bill is presented to the President and not signed within 10 days, excluding Sundays, while Congress is in session, it automatically becomes law.
