Trump Wishes Pope Leo XIV Speedy Recovery, Mentions Pontiff's MAGA-Supporting Brother

President Donald Trump extended his wishes for a swift recovery to Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday, following the pontiff's diagnosis with lung cancer. Trump shared this sentiment while traveling aboard Air Force One, noting his personal connection to the Pope's brother, whom he described as a fervent supporter of his "Make America Great Again" movement.

"I want to see Pope Leo get well. I hear the prognosis for that type of a problem. It's a cancer. It's big stuff. Anytime you have cancer," Trump told reporters, adding, "But the prognosis seems to be good, I've watched. And we just want to wish him our love and our best wishes."

Trump elaborated on his relationship with the pontiff's brother and his wife, stating they are "big Trump supporters" with "MAGA all over their house." He emphasized their affection for the Pope, concluding, "I just want to wish him well. Get better fast."

The Vatican announced Pope Leo XIV's diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma earlier this week, after surgery to remove part of his right lung. The procedure at Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome reportedly lasted about 90 minutes with no reported complications.

According to the Holy See Press Office, tissue examination during surgery confirmed the cancer diagnosis, aligning with prior test results. The Pope had previously shared that doctors detected a small lump in his lung at an early stage, leading to the recommendation for surgery. He reportedly awoke from the operation without complications and returned to his room after a brief observation period.

Pope Leo XIV met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Vatican City last May; Rubio has been lauded by President Donald Trump as someone who is able to bridge gaps in diplomatic relations unlike any other.
