Trump Welcomes Chinese President Xi for High-Stakes Visit
The two leaders are set to discuss artificial intelligence safety, Taiwan, trade, and the war in Iran during a three-day visit.
President Donald Trump personally welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Madame Peng Liyuan, to the United States on Wednesday evening at Joint Base Andrews, marking an unusually high-profile airport greeting for the president.
The leaders are scheduled for private talks at the White House on Thursday. Topics on the agenda are expected to include artificial intelligence safety, Taiwan, trade, the war in Iran, and critical minerals. The visit is scheduled to last three days.
On Thursday, Trump and Xi will participate in a troop review in the Rose Garden before entering formal discussions. Later that evening, Trump and the first lady will host a state dinner for the Chinese delegation in the East Room, where both leaders are expected to give remarks.
Attendees at the state dinner are slated to include several prominent tech executives, such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Tesla and SpaceX's Elon Musk, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Google's Sundar Pichai, and Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Technologies. Nvidia's Jensen Huang, OpenAI's Sam Altman, Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser, and former Apple CEO Tim Cook are also reportedly on the guest list.
Friday's schedule includes a private tea and a tour of the National Archives for Xi, his wife, and the Trumps, focusing on historical national documents. Xi is expected to depart the U.S. later on Friday.
This marks Xi's first state visit to the U.S. since September 2015, during the Obama administration. President Trump previously visited China in May for talks with Xi.
