Former President Donald Trump issued a warning to "downtrodden" blue states following the victories of socialist-backed candidates in three New York City congressional primaries. The candidates, who are part of a growing progressive movement within the Democratic Party, have won their respective races with significant support.
Trump expressed his concerns on social media, stating that states run by these candidates will "ONLY GET WORSE." He specifically targeted the outcomes in New York, where candidates endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani achieved primary wins, setting them on paths to Congress in deep blue districts.
Among the successful candidates are Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York's 13th Congressional District and State Rep. Claire Valdez in New York's 7th Congressional District, both members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Brad Lander, a progressive Democrat and former DSA member, also secured a victory in New York's 10th Congressional District.
Avila Chevalier's campaign platform included policies such as abolishing ICE, ending all deportations, and implementing socialized healthcare. Her past social media posts, which surfaced during the campaign, included advocating for government seizure of private property, critical remarks about President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, and calls for police abolition. She also expressed anti-American sentiments and disparaged the American flag.
Valdez, who currently serves in the New York State Assembly, won her primary decisively. Lander defeated incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman, a congressman who previously served as lead counsel in an impeachment inquiry against Trump.
Trump sarcastically congratulated Mayor Mamdani on the victories, referring to the winning candidates as "solid Communists." He contrasted these results with his own primary endorsements, claiming a 16-0 record the previous night and a consistent success rate with endorsements that he stated goes largely unnoticed by the media.
The DSA has seen a surge in influence, moving from what was once considered a fringe element to a more prominent force within the Democratic Party. The group has adopted a platform that includes strong criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, which they have characterized as a "genocide."
