President Trump stated on Sunday that it is "highly unlikely" the United States will resume hostilities with Iran, provided that ongoing negotiations concerning the Islamic Republic's nuclear program continue to advance. "The answer is highly unlikely it’s going to be necessary," Trump said in a phone interview. "They’re a failing nation. It just came out, you saw this year, 301% inflation. Highly unlikely it will be necessary."

He added, "They’re withering away financially. We’ve hit them militarily. We could finish them off."

Trump had previously suggested he would hold off on military action until after the midterm elections. The US has maintained a blockade against Iran aimed at crippling its economy.

Democrats have announced their intention to pass a resolution limiting Trump's authority to wage war on Iran should they regain control of Congress in January.
