Trump Vows to Pardon Allies if Democrats Win Midterms

Donald Trump has suggested that Republicans could face a significant setback in the upcoming midterms, stating in a TIME interview that he would pardon allies to protect them from Democratic scrutiny. "Yeah, sure I'd do that," Trump responded when asked if he was considering pardoning members of his administration before the end of his term.

He drew a parallel to his predecessor, stating, "Well, Sleepy Joe Biden, he gave pardons to everyone." Trump’s comments come as Democrats on Capitol Hill have signaled intentions to launch investigations into the former president, his family, Cabinet members, and close aides should they gain a majority in the House of Representatives and Senate in November.

Prediction market data cited in the notes indicated a high probability of Democratic victories in both chambers. "They'll probably go after me and I'll go after them," Trump stated regarding potential retaliatory actions.

Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, indicated that if his party wins, key investigative targets would include "the president’s sons and the president and the family," as well as top staff members. Specifically mentioned as prime targets are White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, former AI and Crypto Czar David Sacks, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. Democrats have expressed interest in probing federal deals involving companies linked to Trump family members, the business dealings of Witkoff and Kushner, and Trump's cryptocurrency enterprises.

Trump defended his potential use of pardons by pointing to actions taken by President Biden. "Sleepy Joe gave pardons to everybody. He gave them to Fauci ... But you mean I'm not allowed to give them, but Sleepy Joe's allowed to give them?" he asked, referencing Biden's pardons for officials and family members, including Dr. Anthony Fauci and Hunter Biden, as his term concluded.

When asked about the likelihood of Republican midterm success, Trump expressed confidence that the party would perform well if he actively campaigns. "I think we'll do okay if I campaign, and I intend to. If I campaign…you don't give me enough credit. When I campaign, I give people a lot," he said. The former president is scheduled to hold campaign rallies in Oklahoma and Alabama.
