Trump Visits Gracie Mansion for Meeting with Mayor Mamdani

President Trump visited Gracie Mansion on Monday afternoon for a private meeting with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. This visit marks the first presidential stop at the mayor's official residence since 1981, when Ronald Reagan met with Mayor Ed Koch.

Trump, who is in New York City for the annual UN General Assembly, posted on Truth Social ahead of his arrival, calling Gracie Mansion "one of my favorite places in the World." He also reflected on past meetings with New York mayors, stating, "It will be interesting to see how it looks now, invited by Mayor Mamdani. Look forward to it. MAKE NEW YORK CITY GREAT AGAIN!"

The unusual political relationship between Trump and Mamdani began with their first meeting at the White House in November, despite previous public disagreements where they labeled each other as "fascist" and "communist." They have since met privately and maintained contact.

Mamdani, a former state lawmaker, has sought common ground with Trump, a native New Yorker. The mayor has focused on Trump's background in construction, proposing a $21 billion federal grant to build affordable housing over rail tracks at Sunnyside Yard.

While Mamdani has moderated some of his past stances, particularly regarding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he and Trump reportedly remain at odds over the handling of the conflict in Gaza. Mamdani stated he has not encouraged protests against Netanyahu during his UN address, a shift from earlier comments about the importance of protest. He also previously noted his inability to direct the NYPD to arrest Netanyahu for alleged war crimes in Gaza, despite campaign promises.

Trump has previously expressed his views on the city's direction, advising Mamdani in April to "clean up Manhattan" and "lower taxes" to prevent residents from leaving. Mamdani's administration is currently implementing a new tax on second homes, a policy that contrasts with Trump's concerns about the city's financial climate.
