Former President Donald Trump has escalated his demands for Senate Republicans to pass the SAVE America Act, a voting reform bill he champions, by urging Majority Leader John Thune to prevent the Senate from adjourning for its August recess until the legislation is approved. Trump also suggested eliminating the filibuster to facilitate its passage.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, "John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to 'leave town' until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, Terminates The Filibuster, where Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of, including a full and deep throated Save America Act." He criticized Democrats, suggesting they would act swiftly if in a similar position and lamented what he termed "stupidity" in current Senate leadership.
The SAVE America Act, which has passed the House of Representatives multiple times, requires proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration and mandates a national photo ID standard for casting ballots. It also includes provisions for removing noncitizens from voter rolls and requiring states to verify voter eligibility against federal databases. Proponents argue the bill enhances election security, while critics contend it creates barriers for eligible voters.
Senate Republicans hold 53 seats, short of the 60 needed to overcome a Democratic filibuster. Most Republican senators have expressed reluctance to alter the filibuster rules. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has previously indicated that there are insufficient votes for the bill and that the Senate has a busy schedule leading up to the August recess.
Other Republican senators have voiced support for the bill's advancement. Senator Mike Lee posted on X, objecting to an August recess until the SAVE America Act passes and demanding a roll call vote. Senator Rick Scott also commented on the necessity of delivering secure elections to the American people.
Senator John Kennedy, while expressing confidence in Thune's leadership, suggested that the Majority Leader might be "too cautious" regarding the bill. Makespan: 250
