Trump to Meet Venezuelan Interim President at UN General Assembly

President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The meeting will be the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since a U.S. operation that led to the capture of then-President Nicolas Maduro earlier this year. The encounter also follows an announcement by Trump that the U.S. and Venezuela reached a deal granting the U.S. majority control of significant oil reserves.

Trump will address the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, where he is expected to highlight his administration's approach to global challenges. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz stated that the president would emphasize how his administration has "confronted complex problems head-on around the world," including peace deals and progress on his Gaza peace plan.

A key topic of discussion at the General Assembly is anticipated to be Iran and its nuclear ambitions. Trump is expected to reiterate the U.S. demand that Iran abandon its pursuit of a nuclear weapon. During his address, he will also touch on U.S. accomplishments over the past year, particularly in the Western Hemisphere.

Beyond the meeting with Rodriguez, Trump's schedule includes engagements with other global leaders. He is set to meet with United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Additionally, Trump will participate in a multilateral meeting with leaders from several Gulf countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

A senior administration official indicated that during the meeting with Gulf leaders, Trump will address their concerns regarding the "Iran war." The official stressed the importance of ongoing diplomatic engagement and hearing directly from these partners about their perspectives.

Last year, Trump's address to the U.N. General Assembly was marked by strong criticism of global leadership and a call for the organization to better fulfill its potential. He is expected to continue advocating for his administration's foreign policy agenda during this year's gathering.
