Trump to Honor Tech Leaders, Including Musk, with National Medals

President Donald Trump is scheduled to present the nation's highest honors for scientific and technological achievement to a group of prominent American innovators, including Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, at a White House event on Thursday. This marks the first time Trump has presented the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

The ceremony, dubbed the "Science: A New Golden Age Summit," will recognize Musk, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and AMD CEO Lisa Su with the National Medal of Science. Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will receive the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

A White House spokesperson stated, "The Trump Administration is grateful for the contributions of these incredible leaders in science and technology. These recipients are helping ensure America keeps leading the world in innovation."

The summit aims to explore how super intelligence and private sector investment can accelerate scientific breakthroughs and bolster U.S. leadership in science and technology. This gathering signifies a notable moment for Musk, whose relationship with Trump has seen a resurgence after a period of public discord.

Musk's participation in the event underscores a warming of ties between the two figures. Their relationship had previously strained following Musk's criticism of a tax bill and Trump's subsequent threats regarding government contracts. However, they have since re-established a connection, with Musk attending a recent technology leaders' lunch with Trump and also being present during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit.

Musk has also rejoined an advisory role within the Trump administration, co-leading the Pentagon’s Project Meridian, which focuses on the future of warfare and necessary military technologies. The award ceremony holds personal significance for Trump, as his uncle, John G. Trump, was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Science by President Ronald Reagan for his work in physics and medical applications of radiation.
