Trump to Criticize UN Over War Crime Allegations, Ambassador Waltz Says

President Trump is poised to deliver a strong critique of the United Nations during his upcoming address at the UN General Assembly, focusing on what U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz described as the body's "ridiculous" accusations that American service members have committed war crimes.
Waltz told The Post in an exclusive interview that Trump's remarks would continue his past pattern of challenging the international organization, noting that while the UN does "good work," certain elements can overshadow these efforts.
The specific focus of Trump's criticism is expected to be a report from the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, which alleged that U.S. service members may have engaged in war crimes in Iran. Waltz emphasized the distinction between unintentional civilian casualties, which can occur in conflict, and deliberate actions by regimes against their own populations, citing the Iranian government's reported actions against its citizens.
Beyond the war crime allegations, Waltz anticipates Trump will also highlight the importance of national sovereignty, express concerns about international judiciaries like the International Criminal Court, and advocate for an "America First" foreign policy. This approach, he noted, has already led to reforms in the UN budget, including a historic reduction under the Trump administration.
During the UN General Assembly, Trump is also scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss an end to the ongoing conflict with Russia. Trump previously stated on Truth Social that the war, which he described as "ridiculous and never ending," is causing significant monthly casualties and suffering worldwide.
The U.S. delegation will also engage in bilateral talks with numerous countries, addressing issues such as the conflict with Iran, which has disrupted international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Waltz pointed to diplomatic successes, such as the stabilization efforts in Gaza following a period of conflict and hostage situations, which he said have UN endorsement. He underscored the UN's role as a crucial venue for global dialogue, particularly with leaders from over 150 nations convening annually.
He also highlighted the Trump administration's achievement in cutting the UN's budget for the first time in its history, resulting in over $1 billion in savings with the agreement of more than 190 member states.
