President Donald Trump will attend the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the White House announced Thursday. He will join FIFA President Gianni Infantino on the field to present the World Cup trophy to the victorious team's captain.
This marks Trump's first attendance at a World Cup match. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had previously mentioned Trump's potential attendance last month, but the White House has now made it official. The event is described by the White House as "a fitting conclusion to a tournament that showcased America's ability to host the world on the grandest stage."
Trump and Infantino previously collaborated on trophy presentations for the FIFA Club World Cup final at the same stadium last year, following an assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania. After that match, where Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain, Trump remained on stage during the celebration, which caused some surprise among players.
President Trump also intervened in a significant World Cup controversy, calling Infantino to request a review of a red card issued to U.S. player Folarin Balogun. Balogun had been suspended for the U.S. Men's National Team's round-of-16 match, but the review led to the reversal of the ban, allowing him to play. Trump stated he believed the collision was between "two great athletes" and not a foul. He expressed that it would have been a "big stain" on the tournament if a top player was unable to compete.
Trump was awarded the first FIFA Peace Prize in December at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., during the World Cup final draw. He has recently attended other sporting events, including Game 3 of the NBA Finals and a UFC event. He also received the FIFA Peace Prize during the World Cup final draw in December 2025.
