Trump to Announce Nation's Largest Steel Plant in Iowa

President Donald Trump is scheduled to announce Monday afternoon the construction of the largest steel plant in American history, to be located in Iowa and developed by Minnesota-based Mesabi Metallics. This announcement aligns with the administration's focus on bolstering domestic manufacturing in the lead-up to the November 3 midterm elections.
The move comes as the president's imposition of 50% tariffs on steel has led to increased construction costs. Trump has maintained that these tariffs are essential for national security and to stimulate domestic steel production.
Republicans are currently defending all four of Iowa's House seats and the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Senator Joni Ernst. Polls indicate that all five congressional races in the state are competitive. Additionally, Democrat Rob Sand is considered the frontrunner to potentially win the Iowa governorship, which would be the first time in two decades a Democrat holds the office.
Vice President J.D. Vance has made multiple trips to Iowa to promote the administration's agenda in the predominantly agricultural state, where farmers are facing challenges with elevated prices for fertilizer and diesel fuel.
The new steel plant is projected to create 1,750 permanent jobs in Iowa, in addition to an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 construction jobs. Construction is slated to begin this month, with production expected to commence in 2030. Mesabi Metallics recently made a $2.5 billion investment in an iron ore mine in its home state, marking the first new excavation in the U.S. in fifty years.
The plant will be situated in eastern Iowa. Local residents have reported being approached by a commercial real estate agent regarding land sales in recent weeks, according to the Des Moines Register.
Trump will be joined in the Oval Office for the formal announcement by Mesabi executives and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. A White House spokesperson stated that the president is fulfilling his commitment to rebuilding American industry, reshoring manufacturing, and creating jobs, emphasizing the initiative's role in revitalizing the U.S. steel industry, supporting communities, strengthening supply chains, and ensuring national security.
The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the planned project. The steel plant's initial annual production capacity is estimated at 7.5 million tons, with the potential to increase to 10 million tons per year.
