Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Canada, citing the wildfire smoke that has choked cities across the United States. In a post on Truth Social, the former president stated, "We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their forests and brush."

Trump described the situation as the U.S. being "invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable." He indicated his intention to contact Prime Minister Mark Carney to demand explanations, asserting that the "cost is incalculable."

The former president characterized the situation as "willful negligence" and a recurring issue that costs the United States billions of dollars annually. He suggested that this cost should be added to the tariffs Canada is already paying.

Thick smoke from Canadian wildfires has blanketed major U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C., and New York City, impacting air quality.
