Former President Donald Trump announced that the United States will initiate an investigation into the European Union and is considering imposing new tariffs in retaliation for fines against prominent American technology firms. The declaration comes days after the European Commission fined Google $1 billion for anti-competitive practices.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated that the EU would face a "very big price" for its actions not only against Google but also against other major U.S. tech companies, including Apple, Meta, and Amazon, which have also been subject to investigations.
"The United States of America is not a "PIGGYBANK" for Europe, nor will we allow it to be!" Trump wrote. He further asserted that any fines imposed should be "entirely reversed" and indicated that he is launching a trade investigation into the EU while simultaneously exploring the possibility of implementing "a substantial TARIFF."
