Trump Teases Supreme Court Nomination for Ted Cruz in Texas Rally

During a campaign rally in Lubbock, Texas, former President Donald Trump alluded to the possibility of nominating Senator Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court, describing the Texas Republican as a "brilliant guy" and a "brilliant lawyer." Trump, who previously clashed with Cruz during the 2016 presidential primaries, used the rally to playfully contrast the senator with the three conservative justices he appointed during his term: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.

Trump remarked on the difficulty of getting Supreme Court nominees confirmed, but suggested Cruz's path to confirmation would be easier. He humorously predicted that Democrats would support Cruz's nomination because "they hate the guy and want to get rid of him," while Republicans "can’t stand him" and would also vote for him to "get rid of him." Trump acknowledged that Cruz "would do a great job" on the court.

The remarks come amid Justice Samuel Alito's recent comments about considering retirement, though he has indicated plans to continue serving. Trump has expressed satisfaction with his Supreme Court appointments but has also publicly criticized some of his nominees for rulings that went against his administration's priorities, calling them "not true" to him.

This is not the first time Trump has floated Cruz's name for a potential Supreme Court vacancy. However, Cruz himself has previously stated he has no desire to serve on the high court, preferring to remain active in the political arena. He recounted that Trump had discussed potential nominations with him during his first term, but Cruz declined each time, wanting to stay "out of the arena of the political battle."
