Former President Donald Trump has set his sights on renaming New Mexico, posting a map on Truth Social that depicted the state's name with 'Mexico' crossed out and replaced by 'America.' This move follows a recent renaming of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' amidst a trade dispute with Canada.
The former president shared the altered map of the Southwest state on Sunday, without further comment. This action occurred shortly after he posted a photograph of himself altering a map of Lake Ontario, changing its name to 'Lake America.' The renaming of Lake Ontario was part of a broader tension with Canada stemming from failed negotiations over tariffs.
Trump's official store began selling 'Lake America' hats for $55 following the publicized name change. Polls indicated that approximately 14 percent of U.S. citizens supported the renaming of Lake Ontario. Alongside the map posts, Trump shared other content, including a video of geese with machine guns and an AI-generated clip of him replacing a 'Lake Ontario' sign with a 'Lake America' one.
Earlier, on August 30, Trump had stated his intention for the U.S. to halt all Canadian products unless companies relocated to America. This stance was a direct response to the tariff disagreements between the two countries.
The New Mexico renaming suggestion is the latest in a series of name changes Trump has pursued for major landmarks. Previously, he proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America,' a proposal that drew significant criticism. In response to criticism regarding the Lake Ontario renaming, Trump shared an image suggesting that liberal groups have also renamed various entities, listing examples such as Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day, Washington Redskins to Washington Commanders, and 'Illegal Alien' to 'Undocumented Noncitizen.'
