President Donald Trump has put forward a surprise candidate to fill the vacancy in the U.S. Senate left by the passing of South Carolina lawmaker Senator Lindsey Graham. Trump announced via social media that he has recommended Darline Graham Nordone, Senator Graham's sister, to Governor Henry McMaster for the interim Senate position.

"I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina," Trump wrote. He added, "This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!"

Governor McMaster is expected to address the late Senator's passing and the subsequent vacancy in Congress later today.

Senator Graham and his sister Darline shared a close bond. Following the deaths of their parents within a 15-month period in the 1970s, a 21-year-old Lindsey Graham legally adopted his teenage sister and played a role in raising her.
