Trump Suggests He Has the Right to Run for Third Term
Former President Donald Trump told a rally crowd in Iowa that he believes he is entitled to run for another term, citing baseless claims of election fraud from 2020.
Former President Donald Trump suggested he has the right to run for a third presidential term, telling supporters at a rally in Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday that he believes he is entitled to do so because the 2020 election was rigged. The Constitution's 22nd Amendment prohibits presidents from being elected more than twice.
"I think the one thing is different. They cheated us on the second one because we won it three times. So I think I have the right to run again," Trump stated, prompting boos from the crowd when he initially acknowledged the term limits. He falsely maintained that he won the 2020 election over President Joe Biden, despite a lack of evidence of widespread fraud.
Trump visited Iowa to support Republican candidates ahead of the midterm elections. He endorsed Representative Ashley Hinson, who is in a tight race for the Senate against Democrat Josh Turek. Polling also shows Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand leading his Republican opponent Zach Lahn in the state.
During the rally, Trump also commented on a controversial campaign ad for Ohio gubernatorial hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy. The ad features the mother of Ramaswamy's Democratic rival, Dr. Amy Acton. Trump defended the ad, stating he encouraged Ramaswamy to proceed with it and criticized the press for focusing on the controversy. "She really said she was a horrible liar? I mean, it was crazy. And he made a commercial, he put it up, like I would do, like most people would do," Trump said.
