President Donald Trump has indicated a preference for a prolonged, less aggressive strategy in the conflict with Iran, prioritizing economic pressure over direct military confrontation. In an interview with Wayne Allyn Root for Real America’s Voice, Trump described this approach as "easy, relaxed," suggesting it could lead to Iran's failure through financial leverage.
Trump articulated three potential strategies for dealing with Iran. The first involves "bopping along," maintaining the current economic pressure and allowing Iran's internal economic struggles, such as 300% inflation and a devalued currency, to weaken the regime. He stated that Iran "cannot have a nuclear weapon" and that his primary reason for engagement is to prevent that outcome.
"We could just keep it alone, and they’re going to fail," Trump said. "We could just keep, you know, doing sort of just like nice and easy, relaxed."
A second option he mentioned was to "hit them really, really hard." However, he emphasized the third strategy, which is to "beat them economically," noting that this is already part of the current approach. "That’s sort of a part of the first one," Trump added. "So economically, they are a mess. They can’t borrow money. We control their money, what they had, which is a lot. They had a lot, and we have total control of it."
Trump declared himself Iran's banker, asserting significant control over the nation's finances. "I’m their banker. I am their banker," he stated. The Treasury Department has reported that Iran's currency has depreciated by approximately 20% since the conflict began, and the reimposed naval blockade has reduced oil exports significantly.
Trump also expressed frustration with Iran's negotiators, calling them "devious" and "dishonest" for allegedly agreeing to terms and then denying them to the press. The conflict has been ongoing since Feb. 28, with a cease-fire in place since April 8. A memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 reportedly collapsed last month after Iran attacked commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
In response to Trump's remarks, Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei posted on X that "Iran is in a strategic, fateful confrontation with Global Arrogance."
