Trump Silent on Falklands Sovereignty During Meeting With UK Prime Minister

Donald Trump remained silent when UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham raised the issue of Falklands Islands sovereignty during a meeting in New York, according to reports. Burnham had sought the former president's support amidst escalating tensions over the South Atlantic archipelago, fueled by Argentina's President Javier Milei.

Burnham stated that he presented the British position on the islands' self-determination to Trump, who he said "very much understood what I was saying." However, Trump offered no public endorsement or comment on the matter.

Milei, a close ally of Trump, has intensified Argentina's claims to the Falklands in recent weeks. He reiterated the claim in a televised address, stating the islands "are our future." His government has also implemented sanctions against companies involved in oil exploration around the islands and intends to file a criminal complaint against Navitas Petroleum.

This development follows earlier remarks by Trump, who in September questioned the UK's capability to defend the Falklands due to its domestic challenges with immigration and energy. He suggested that in the event of a new dispute, he might be called upon to "settle" the matter.

The US maintains a formal neutrality on the Falklands' sovereignty, though it provided support to Britain during the 1982 Falklands War, which followed Argentina's invasion. The conflict resulted in significant casualties on both sides, as well as among Falkland Islanders.

Milei is expected to address world leaders at the UN General Assembly, where he may further press Argentina's claim, potentially referencing Trump's shifting stance.

Milei had previously suggested that the United States was considering a change in its position on the islands, viewing Argentina as a reliable and strategically important partner.
