Trump Shows Xi Marine One, New Helipad During White House Visit
The president offered his Chinese counterpart a tour of White House construction projects and personal displays, alongside discussions on geopolitical issues.
President Donald Trump provided Chinese leader Xi Jinping with a tour of his White House projects during the Chinese president's Thursday visit, including a display of his Marine One helicopter and a newly constructed granite helipad. The two leaders also engaged in discussions on a range of significant geopolitical topics.
After a 90-minute meeting in the Oval Office, Trump escorted Xi to the South Lawn. There, Marine One was positioned on the new helipad. Trump and Xi, accompanied by a small group of aides and translators, boarded the helicopter for a look around and a brief conversation with the pilots. The aircraft remained on the ground.
Trump also drew Xi's attention to a ballroom under construction where the East Wing once stood. The Chinese president observed two large concrete towers being built as Trump discussed the project. Reporters were present for this portion of the visit.
During the visit, Trump emphasized his interest in construction projects, including the helipad which he had reportedly pushed crews to complete in time for Xi's arrival. He noted Xi's expertise in granite, stating, "He’s an expert on stone, aside from many other things -- and he loves good granite."
Trump also showcased photographs displayed in the West Wing, including one of himself and Xi from a previous meeting in Beijing. He joked about his appearance in the photo, stating, "Who is that? I don’t recognize him!" and added, "We have a lot of respect for you."
Additionally, Trump showed Xi a copy of the Declaration of Independence mounted on the Oval Office wall. He also guided Xi past a row of presidential portraits between the White House residence and the West Wing, pausing to highlight his own image. Between two portraits of himself, Trump had hung a depiction of an autopen signing President Joe Biden's name, referencing his claims about Biden's capabilities.
The visit occurred amidst significant geopolitical challenges, including discussions on artificial intelligence, Taiwan, trade tariffs, and the war in Iran, a country with which China maintains close economic ties.
