Trump Shares Senator's Phone Number on Social Media in Dispute Over Daylight Saving Bill
Former president urges voters to contact Sen. Tom Cotton over stalled "Sunshine Protection Act."
Donald Trump publicly shared the personal cell phone number of Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., on his Truth Social platform, expressing frustration over the stalled "Sunshine Protection Act." Trump, who referred to Cotton as "a friend," criticized the senator for preventing the bill from reaching a vote in the Senate last October.
"For some reason, Tom is stopping the Bill and, in the Senate, it’s very easy to do, it only takes one! It should pass overwhelmingly, in a Bipartisan fashion," Trump posted. "So, everyone in Arkansas, a State I love, and won 3 times, the last by by 34 points, tell Tom to, GET IT DONE!"
Trump included Cotton's phone number in the post, urging constituents to contact the senator. The number, associated with the Dardanelle, Arkansas, area code, was called by Fox News Digital but did not reach Cotton.
The Truth Social post emerged as the Senate is out of session until November 3, making a vote on the bill impossible until after the midterm elections. The House of Representatives previously passed its version of the bill in July with bipartisan support by a vote of 308-117. That bill was then sent to a Senate committee but has not yet been taken up.
Trump has been a vocal proponent of ending the biannual clock change. He argues that making Daylight Saving Time permanent would lead to decreased crime rates, fewer car accidents, and reduced risks of cardiac issues, stroke, and seasonal depression, among other benefits.
Despite bipartisan support in the House, the bill's progression has faced obstacles in the Senate. Hours after Trump's social media post, Cotton reiterated his stance on daylight saving time.
"No one likes changing the clock, me included, but Congress has enacted permanent Daylight Savings Time multiple times before and repealed it each time once Americans experienced absurdly late sunrises in the winter," Cotton posted on X. "Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark, and I’ll always put Arkansas first."
This is not the first time Trump has disclosed a lawmaker's phone number. In 2015, during his presidential campaign, he shared the number of then-Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., following critical remarks Graham made about Trump.
