Former President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social late Sunday night, criticizing the integrity of U.S. elections by contrasting them with the "CORRUPT" process in the United States and what he believed to be the prompt results of "India’s Presidential Election."
However, Trump confused India, which has not held a presidential election since 2022, with Brazil, whose presidential election began on Sunday. He subsequently deleted the post and shared a revised version that correctly referenced Brazil's election.
Despite Trump's correction, a screenshot of the original post remained on the White House's Rapid Response account on X for several hours. In the initial post, Trump highlighted that the results of Brazil's election "came out shortly after the vote closed, on the SAME DAY!"
He contrasted this with U.S. elections, stating, "In Detroit, Philadelphia, California, and numerous other U.S. Cities and States, the results, with much smaller numbers, will often take weeks to Rig, I mean, calculate." He concluded by declaring, "Voting in America is CORRUPT!!!"
The Brazilian election utilizes electronic voting machines, which allow for the rapid delivery of results. Brazilians have also expressed confidence in their electoral process.
This incident follows Trump's persistent efforts to foster distrust in election processes. In July, he asserted in a primetime speech that Americans had been "blatantly lied to about the security of our election infrastructure, including the security of electronic voting machines." He cited a 2020 memo from the National Intelligence Council that noted the potential for foreign agents to compromise U.S. election infrastructure. However, FactCheck.org noted that the same memo also stated that such manipulation would likely be insufficient to alter the overall election outcome.
