Trump Sends $500 Checks to Nearly 1 Million Obamacare Enrollees
The former president claims the payments are a refund for alleged overcharging by the Biden administration.
Former President Donald Trump is sending $500 checks to approximately 950,000 Americans enrolled in Obamacare, along with a letter explaining the payments. The checks are being distributed to individuals in 30 states as early as this week.
Trump stated in the letter that the payments are a refund for what he described as the Biden administration's overcharging of user fees to health insurance companies. He asserts that these companies then passed on higher rates to consumers. "I am proud to return your money to you, and I will never stop fighting to put the American People FIRST, restore Affordability, protect your hard-earned money, and lower the Cost of Healthcare," Trump wrote in the letter, which was first reported by USA Today.
He further elaborated, "For years, the Biden administration overcharged you to fund the operation of HealthCare.gov. That money belongs to hard-working Americans, not the Government, and now I’m returning it to you! You have paid into this flawed System, and now you are finally getting something back."
The 30 states receiving these checks include areas with closely contested congressional races, such as Florida, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas. States with independent health insurance exchanges, like California, New York, and Pennsylvania, are not included in this distribution.
A White House official told USA Today that most recipients earn around 400% of the poverty line, which translates to approximately $64,000 for an individual or $132,000 for a family of four. These individuals reportedly paid most or all of their insurance premiums without federal subsidies.
This initiative follows Vice President JD Vance's announcement that the federal government was saving the Obamacare program an estimated $2.2 billion by removing 750,000 users suspected of fraudulent enrollment, with an additional 450,000 under review.
Approximately 23 million Americans enrolled in insurance plans through the Affordable Care Act this year. Trump had previously announced the $500 checks on September 10 during the Republican midterm convention in Dallas. This announcement came a day after he pledged $5,000 to all adult citizens if the Republican party maintained control of Congress, a proposal that raised concerns among fiscal conservatives about potential inflation and increased national debt.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump also signed letters accompanying stimulus checks, a practice also followed by President Joe Biden. The 30 states receiving rebates are Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
